Get prepped for post with Atomos
Post-production doesn’t start in the edit suite, it begins the moment you turn on your camera.
What you capture during a shoot heavily influences what you can achieve later in post. Miss the focus, clip the highlights, or record in the wrong format, and there’s no way to fully recover your shot. Atomos monitor-recorders give you the confidence that every shot will be sharp, exposed, framed, and captured in the format your post-production team needs (especially if that post production team is just you!). Great footage means less time fixing, more time creating, and a smoother path from set to screen.
Monitoring & accuracy on set
“Fix it in post” is rarely faster or cheaper than getting it right on the day. A small camera screen can disguise issues that become glaringly obvious on a larger screen but Atomos monitors help you catch them while they’re still easy to fix.
Focus peaking and zoom tools
Shallow depth of field is a hallmark of the “cinematic” look, but it means needing to be super careful with sharps. What looked sharp on your tiny camera monitor quickly becomes soft on a larger display, and even more so blown up on a full cinema screen. These tools let you know instantly whether a shot is sharp or not, even if it’s not visually obvious, and avoids your editor needing to reach for the dreaded “sharpen” effect.
Touch to focus
Controlling focus with a touch is invaluable when turning a focus ring might risk bumping the shot, or when your subject shifts position mid-take. A quick tap gets you ‘in the zone,’ leaving only minor tweaks if needed. Shinobi II and Shinobi 7 RX currently support camera control, with more support to come for other devices.
Exposure tools – waveform, false color, zebras
Colorists love dynamic range. Give them the latitude to shape the look in post by avoiding clipped highlights or crushed blacks by nailing exposure on set.
Framing overlays & aspect guides
Clients rarely want just a 16:9 master anymore. They expect 5:4 crops for socials and 9:16 versions for reels as well. Compose once and quickly confirm your frame works across every format.
Anamorphic desqueeze
Anamorphic lenses deliver stunning images so make sure you’re choosing the best framing for the actual aspect ratio, not a stretched guess. You want your frame to make the cut, not become an awkward post-FX re-frame.
Onion skin overlays
Whether shooting for a match cut or aligning for VFX, Onion Skin makes referencing a previous shot quick and easy, and will make your VFX artist very happy.
Calibrated HDR displays
The best-case scenario in the field is seeing exactly what the colourist will see later. Whether the project is intended for YouTube, broadcast, or cinema, there’ll be no surprises in the color suite. Calibration is made quick and simple with our on-device calibration system (and a Calibrite probe), available on Shinobi II, Shinobi 7 RX and Ninja TX monitors.
All Atomos monitors and monitor-recorders include a range of standard focus, exposure and framing tools. Advanced tools such as EL ZoneTM false colour are available out-of-the-box on Shinobi II, Shinobi 7 RX, Shogun Ultra and Ninja TX.
Recording formats & quality
Your choice of recording format sets the boundaries for post. Many internal camera codecs use heavy compression. Compressed files may be small and quick to transfer, but they stress editing systems and are difficult to grade. Atomos recorders record using high-quality codecs that are robust and designed for post.
ProRes RAW
Full camera sensor data is preserved for maximum control in color grading. It requires a bit more work in post, but colorists love its flexibility and ProRes RAW is now fully supported in most popular NLEs such as Apple Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, Avid Media Composer, and DaVinci Resolve. Learn more about ProRes RAW.
Apple ProRes / Avid DNx
Smooth, edit-ready files that drop straight into the timeline without transcoding and hold up to uncompromising color grading.
High-quality 4:4:4 and HQ formats
VFX workflows require pristine images. If you’ve ever tried to key a badly lit, compressed green screen with talent with flyaway hair, you know how quickly edges (and nerves) fray. Recording in 4:4:4 or HQ gives compositors clean, sharp sources, saving hours of cleanup.
High-frame-rate capture
Dramatic slow-motion and dynamic speed ramps are staples of cinematic visuals but require robust codecs. Capture high frame rates at high quality ProRes and every individual frame will remain usable whether for a social campaign or a theatrical release.
Multichannel audio
Productions with multiple participants need discreet audio tracks. Atomos recorders capture multiple audio channels directly with the footage, so editors and mixers have everything isolated for a clean, professional mix.
LOG with LUT preview
LOG isn’t pretty to look at, but it preserves important image detail for grading. Atomos monitors let you monitor a LOG source in Rec.709 or with a LUT so you and your clients see a “normal” image, while still capturing that LOG file for color.
So when you’re setting up your recording format on your Ninja, Shogun or Sumo be sure to find out what the post team are hoping to achieve so you can deliver the best format for their needs. For ultimate capture bandwidth for high data and frame rates, we recommend the Ninja TX, with it’s effortless ability to record to super high-speed CFexpress cards.
Workflow speed & collaboration
Post workflows can be dramatically simplified by smart decisions on set. Syncing devices in multicam shoots, marking favourite takes, or capturing notes for the editor all save huge amounts of time later.
Camera to Cloud
Upload clips while you shoot to the cloud, so your editor can begin assembling the story immediately, or clients can review shots remotely as they happen. ATOMOSphere is perfect for this purpose, but you can also send to Frame.IO or Dropbox directly from your Atomos connected device, such as a Shogun Ultra or Ninja TX.
Pre-roll recording
Did your interview subject start talking before ‘action’… again? Pre-roll ensures you never miss those unexpected moments, and the director will thank you when you capture that almost-lost golden soundbite.
Timecode & sync with AirGlu
In multicamera setups, synchronised timecode is everything. Cameras and audio devices can generate or read timecode using Atomos UltraSync modules to create a tightly synced network via AirGlu (Shogun Ultra and Ninja TX come with AirGlu capability built in). Perfectly synced multicam footage makes editors’ lives far easier.

Matched file naming
Atomos recorders can mirror camera file names, making it quick and simple to relink masters with in-camera proxies after edit. Available on selected cameras.
On-set tagging system
Mark ‘go takes’ or flag issues while they’re fresh in your mind directly on your device. Those notes can be exported as XML or metadata attached to the clip (FCPX), informing the editor’s first pass.
