Sun Dragon: Lighting the way for live production

Faced with architectural constraints and a live audience, Adrien Maillard needed a lighting solution that was discreet and adaptable. The Sun Dragon rope light, equipped with DMX control, proved ideal for illuminating a televised classical concert.

Adrien Maillard, a gaffer based in Paris, has spent nearly two decades lighting films, commercials, and music videos. With over 150 commercials and 60 music productions to his name, Adrien’s experience spans from high-end fashion campaigns to feature films. For his latest project, a classical concert filmed for Arte – the French-German television channel – he turned to the Atomos Sun Dragon to solve a unique lighting challenge.

The concert was recorded in a historic church, where towering key lights illuminated the performers from above. But with most of the lighting positioned overhead, Adrien needed a way to introduce light from below, without obstructing the audience’s view or adding unnecessary bulk to the stage. “We placed two Sun Dragons along the edge of the stage to provide bottom fill lighting,” Adrien explains. “To prevent any spill from reaching the audience, I ran a long strip of black tape as a mask. It worked perfectly.”

“Normally, you’d have to piece together other components – but here, Sun Dragon was all in one, and it was bright.”

Sun Dragon is the world’s first production and cinema rope light, featuring a high-density LED arrangement that delivers an impressive 2000 lumens of brightness. Its flexible, lightweight design made it easy to tuck into tight spaces and wrap around the contours of the stage. “The flexibility of Sun Dragon allowed us to whip around the corners,” Adrien says. “Normally, you’d have to piece together a Ruban LED, a DMX driver, and other components – but here, it was all in one, and it was bright. That saved us hours of prep and meant we didn’t need extra crew to rig everything, which was a huge advantage in a live environment.”

With its large display, Sun Dragon’s DMX controller allowed Adrien to fine-tune brightness, color, hue, and RGB channels without interrupting the performance. “The DMX controller enabled us to do swift adjustments, even during the show,” Adrien notes. “That kind of control is rare in something so compact.”

The impact of Sun Dragon didn’t go unnoticed. The Director of Photography on the shoot was so impressed that he planned to purchase his own units. “He told me, ‘If you’re not available with yours, I’ll need to get a few myself,’” Adrien says. “I think we’ll be using Sun Dragons on every concert shoot from now on!”
