Adrien Maillard, a gaffer based in Paris, has spent nearly two decades lighting films, commercials, and music videos. With over 150 commercials and 60 music productions to his name, Adrien’s experience spans from high-end fashion campaigns to feature films. For his latest project, a classical concert filmed for Arte – the French-German television channel – he turned to the Atomos Sun Dragon to solve a unique lighting challenge.
The concert was recorded in a historic church, where towering key lights illuminated the performers from above. But with most of the lighting positioned overhead, Adrien needed a way to introduce light from below, without obstructing the audience’s view or adding unnecessary bulk to the stage. “We placed two Sun Dragons along the edge of the stage to provide bottom fill lighting,” Adrien explains. “To prevent any spill from reaching the audience, I ran a long strip of black tape as a mask. It worked perfectly.”
