Robert Rodriguez runs post production at Point.360 in Burbank, CA. Point.360 is a full service post production and media company that has recently worked on episodic series Cobra Kai, Matlock, Yellowjackets, upcoming titles for Disney Channel as well as various independent features and short films such as Weird, the Weird Al Yankovic film and the upcoming Long Haired Businessmen comedy for Paramount.

Robert is also a filmmaker, supporting filmmakers of all levels of experience in making proper choices when it comes to finishing. “Most of the young filmmakers I work with come from the under-represented communities in the film industry and a lot of them spend all of their grants and budget on production then come to me to figure out how finish,” he comments. “We support every level of postproduction for scripted and unscripted, but we also offer mastering and QC services for many of the major studios and production companies.”

“What is interesting about all these projects, big and small, is that they all have common requirements for review and approval for dailies and cuts. Many of the multi cam and unscripted productions benefit from cloud dailies since they often shoot in Rec.709 to go straight to edit, while others shoot in LOG and require a dailies color pass. In either case, ATOMOSphere is there to help serve up files to editorial quickly,” adds Robert.

ATOMOSphere is a powerful cloud-based production ecosystem and membership platform that is directly integrated with cloud-connected Atomos monitor-recorders. It’s designed to work with files from any camera or recorder and supports cloud-based file transfers for integration with any editing system or delivery platform.

Robert discovered ATOMOSphere after first experimenting with direct uploads from his Ninja and Shogun through its predecessor, Atomos Cloud Studio. AtomOS 11.15.00, released in May, gave the user the ability to send files directly into ATOMOSphere, as well as third-party cloud platforms like Adobe’s frame.io and Dropbox. Atomos offers all its customers 20GB of free storage to ease them into a cloud-based workflow, with flexible storage plans available as their productions grow.

“With ATOMOSphere, I can load a file or send a link and the end user doesn’t need an account to review. This is great for people that just need to review something fast.”

ATOMOSphere gives Robert a means of getting dailies to review and approval directly from the set. “The key advantage for me is speed,” asserts Robert. “Physical storage media coming from set to facility or edit bay can take up to 12 hours after call time. That’s just dead time for editors or dailies operators, spent waiting.”

“I also like how easy ATOMOSphere file sharing is to use, and I like the fact that it’s agnostic and works with other cloud-based storage if needed. I can load a file or send a link to an already uploaded file and the end user doesn’t need an account to review like other review and approval services. This feature is great for non-technical people that just need to review something fast.”

Robert remarks that many low-budget productions don’t recognize the value in creating proper dailies. The job of making dailies is delegated to loggers, assistant editors or editors, and many of the critical metadata is “washed away” in transcodes that work well offline but have no relationship to the source files anymore. By the time the turnover arrives at a facility for finishing, it is very difficult and costly to work with. Robert sees a huge potential in solutions like ATOMOSphere to make dailies production much more practical and affordable for filmmakers of all budgets.
