In the field with Ninja RAW

Award‑winning Scottish filmmaker and wildlife photographer Libby Penman spent the summer covering nature shoots, live sport and interview setups with Ninja RAW in her kit throughout. She shares the tools she used most and the moments where it made a difference on location.

Libby Penman’s shoots vary day to day, from peaceful wildlife setups to fast-moving sports coverage. This summer she added Ninja RAW to her kit, and it didn’t take long for it to earn a permanent place in her bag. “As a filmmaker shooting a lot of sports this summer, the Ninja RAW has quickly become one of my favourite pieces of kit,” she says. “The sharpness and quality of the screen is the best I’ve used on any external monitor.”

With its bright 5‑inch HDR touchscreen, the Ninja RAW is built for outdoor shooting. The 1500‑nit display makes it easy to see footage clearly, even in strong daylight. For Libby, who spent most of her summer working in full sunlight, Ninja RAW’s display made a big difference. “Ninja RAW held up really well in bright light, which I was almost always shooting in,” she says. She also found the sun hood helpful for cutting glare. “The wee sun hood turned out to be really useful on set,” she adds.

Ninja RAW’s exposure tools made a noticeable difference on Libby’s shoots. The monitor comes with a full suite of built‑in features like zebras, waveform and EL Zone. For Libby, the zebra tool became her go‑to. “I used zebras more than anything. On a bigger screen you can really focus on any areas that might be overexposed and sort it out in camera. I’m usually shooting on an FX6, so with the internal NDs I could get things exposed properly and avoid having to rescue highlights later in post.”

Working at night brings a whole different set of challenges, and Libby found the Ninja RAW just as helpful in low light as it was outdoors. “On a bigger screen, using waveforms makes it so much easier to trust what you’re seeing instead of guessing exposure in the dark,” she says. “I’ve had a few night shoots recently, and the Ninja RAW ended up being a really important part of my kit.”

“At this point, I’d find it hard to do a shoot without Ninja RAW… I absolutely loved this wee monitor.”

One small feature ended up changing the way Libby puts together her tutorial content, as it gave her an easy way to show viewers exactly what she sees in‑camera. Ninja RAW can record the camera’s display straight to the CFexpress Type B card in the monitor. “I loved being able to record the camera screen straight to the card. It’s so handy,” she says. “I’m always looking for ways to show my settings, and this was easily the best. For photography or cinematography tutorials, viewers can see exactly what the camera sees in real time. It’s brilliant for anyone making how‑to content, and I’ve had people tell me they really appreciate being able to see my screen.”

A rooftop soccer match in New York turned out to be the perfect example of where Libby would have missed key moments without the Ninja RAW. “I wanted to film really close to the ground, right at the level of the players and the ball. Because everything was happening so low, I couldn’t see the camera screen at all from that angle. The Ninja RAW ended up being my only screen, and I could tilt it into whatever position I needed on my gimbal arm. It let me capture some great low‑down moments,” she says.

Fast‑moving subjects were where the Ninja RAW’s touchscreen really proved itself. “The touchscreen made a massive difference for quick adjustments too, when you’re following unpredictable movements like wildlife or a sports game,” she says. She was also impressed by how long the monitor ran and how unobtrusive it felt on her rig. “Battery life is another highlight, noticeably better than other monitors I’ve used. The unit itself is neat, slick, and genuinely easy to use.”

By the end of the summer, Ninja RAW had settled so comfortably into Libby’s routine that she couldn’t imagine shooting without it. “At this point, I’d find it hard to do a shoot without this monitor,” she says. “It’s compact enough to carry anywhere, but the screen is still large and sharp enough to give a proper, detailed view. That means no surprises when you’re reviewing footage later. I highly recommend it; I absolutely loved this wee monitor.”
