Fine-food filmmaking

Learn how Simone Giuffra uses the Ninja’s exposure tools and ProRes RAW recording to create stunning food and product imagery.

By Atomos

Simone is a content creator and filmmaker based in Italy, specializing in cinematic food, beverage and product visuals. “I love creating atmospheric, detailed images using practical effects, controlled lighting and movement to make each scene feel immersive,” he explains. Alongside his commercial work, he also produces behind‑the‑scenes content to give others a clearer understanding of how each scene comes together.

Simone works with a LUMIX S1 camera and uses Ninja as his main monitor-recorder. “The Ninja has become a key part of my workflow,” he says. “I use it in both studio shoots and run‑and‑gun situations. It’s the tool I rely on for accurate monitoring, exposure checks, focus control and recording during cinematic sequences.” The larger screen helps Simone judge his images more confidently and make faster creative decisions. “Having a more reliable display on set helps me move quickly and stay confident in the images I’m getting,” he adds.

Before switching to Ninja, Simone often struggled with the limitations of his camera’s built‑in screen. Focus issues were easy to miss and only became obvious when reviewing footage later. “I sometimes noticed that some shots were out of focus,” he says. “With the Ninja, that changed immediately. It made the whole shooting process feel smoother and far more professional.”

With Ninja, Simone captures high‑quality ProRes RAW footage to an external SSD, giving him more flexibility in post and the storage needed for longer shoots. “The Ninja allows me to take full advantage of the features of my camera,” he says. “Recording in ProRes RAW to an external SSD gives me files that are detailed and easy to work with.”

Exposure tools such as focus peaking and false color have become essential when he’s working with tight product shots and controlled lighting. “Having those tools available in real time makes a huge difference and allows me to work much more efficiently,” he says.

“Ninja made the whole shooting process feel smoother and far more professional.”

Simone recalls a food project in the studio that required challenging camera angles. By mounting Ninja separately from the camera, he could monitor the image while adjusting the scene. With a complex lighting setup, Ninja made it easy to judge exposure and focus without stopping to review every take. “Without it, I probably would have spent much longer checking footage back and forth,” he says.

In recent months, Simone has been focusing on commercial projects in the food and beverage industry. He’s also been experimenting with creative lighting effects and producing more behind‑the‑scenes educational content. “Sharing the process has become an important part of my creative direction,” he says.

As his projects have grown more ambitious, Ninja has remained a tool he uses for every shoot. “The Ninja continues to support me because it gives me the flexibility I need on set, especially during technical or visually demanding shoots. Like a camera, it’s a device that never leaves my backpack,” he concludes.
