His primary rig features a Sony FX6 camera with a wide-angle lens, securely mounted on a Studio Titan America scissor camera stand for extra support. “I didn’t even know such a stand existed – it’s phenomenal. The moment I took it out of the box, I knew this would be my new rolling stand at trade shows. It’s incredibly stable and very easy to manoeuver,” he adds.
The shock absorption system at the base of the stand provides stability during movement, keeping jarring to a minimum as Walter navigates cables and uneven terrain. “When I’m moving over bumps and cables at a show, the FX6 on top experiences far less motion, which helps maintain steady shots,” he explains.
For audio capture, Walter uses the Sound Devices MixPre-3 sound recorder paired with Sennheiser HD 25 Plus headphones. The adjustable earpieces allow him to stay engaged in conversations while monitoring the sound. “I chose these because the earpieces turn upwards, so when someone is speaking to me, I can lift one over my ear while also listening to the audio,” Walter explains.
Walter synchronizes his audio by connecting Atomos UltraSync One timecode devices to the Sound Devices MixPre-3 and FX6 camera. These devices provide wireless, frame-accurate timecode, reducing time spent manually syncing footage in post production. “When you’re conducting many interviews at trade shows, it’s much more efficient to use timecode for audio sync rather than a traditional clapper – especially since you may not hear a clapper when your camera is positioned at a distance,” Walter notes.
