Clai Davies is a freelance videographer based in North Wales, UK, who specialises in creating promotional videos for businesses. His work ranges from architectural case studies and real estate walkthroughs to brand campaigns and social media content. “I try to tell stories through visuals – using smooth camera work, cinematic colour grading, and drone shots to help brands connect with people,” he says.
Clai’s main setup includes the Sony FX30 cinema camera paired with the Sony 16–55mm G lens, supported by the Shinobi monitor. He also uses DJI drones for aerial coverage, stabilisers for smooth motion, and audio equipment such as the Hollyland Lark M1 mics when needed. “I went with the Shinobi because I needed a monitor I could trust,” Clai explains. “It gives me control over exposure and lets me see exactly what I’m capturing, while keeping my setup compact and easy to handle. On fast‑paced shoots, I don’t have time to second‑guess – I need to know I’m getting the best possible image out of the FX30.”
Shinobi’s monitoring tools play a large part in delivering Clai’s vision. “The features I use most are False Color and Waveforms,” he says. “False Color is great for quickly assessing exposure across the frame, especially when lighting isn’t even – like bright windows in an interior shot or mixed lighting in a showroom. It helps me make sure highlights aren’t blown out and shadows still hold detail, without constantly checking a histogram or overcomplicating the setup.”
Waveforms give him a clear, real‑time view of overall brightness. “They’re particularly useful when I’m moving quickly between shots or working with reflective surfaces,” he says. “Together, these tools give me the confidence to shoot knowing I’m getting clean, balanced footage that will hold up in post and stay consistent across every setup.”
Shinobi is also central to Clai’s handheld and gimbal work, where a larger, high‑quality screen is essential for judging focus and exposure. “Its lightweight design makes it especially helpful in fast‑moving environments, interior walkthroughs, busy classrooms, or any situation where I need to monitor the image closely without being intrusive,” he says.
