Jamie began his journey into filmmaking in 2011, enrolling in Film and Television studies at Aberystwyth University. Since then, he has worked across short and feature films, commercials and corporate campaigns, steadily establishing himself as a skilled camera and drone operator. His credits include the action-thriller Control, starring Kevin Spacey, alongside a variety of independent projects that have honed his technical expertise. “I like to take on a wide range of projects to learn new approaches to different productions,” Jamie explains. “Working with different people also helps expand my network and adapt to new challenges.”
Flying high: drone shots and feature films with Atomos
From short films to features, camera and drone operator Jamie Walker uses Shinobi II and Ninja for precise, reliable monitoring on set.
Jamie first turned to the Ninja monitor-recorder for its 4K ProRes RAW recording and crystal‑clear display. “I needed a field monitor that offered clarity on set with the flexibility of RAW recording,” he explains. “ProRes RAW gave me far greater scope in post‑production workflows, and as it has become more widely supported across industry camera setups, it’s a no‑brainer. Combined with the responsive touchscreen and file management system, it makes logging and editing far less painstaking.”
As his work expanded, Jamie added Shinobi II, a lightweight monitor ideal for gimbal work and focus pulling. Its portability and brightness made it a natural fit for drone operations, where weight and visibility are crucial. “I’m always looking for kit that complements my rig,” he notes. “Atomos products are reliable, well-priced, and consistently recommended by my peers.” The combination of Ninja and Shinobi allows him to move easily between handheld, gimbal, and aerial setups, maintaining a consistent look across every shot.
“ProRes RAW gave me far greater scope in post‑production workflows – it’s a no‑brainer.”
One of Jamie’s favourite aspects of the Atomos ecosystem is the ability to load LUTs and provide real‑time monitoring for directors. On a recent short film with BAFTA‑nominated director Emily Burnett, he used Ninja and Shinobi to give the creative team a clear sense of the final look during filming. “Emily wanted to see the gritty feel of the set as we shot,” Jamie recalls. “By loading a LUT and combining it with live drone monitoring, she could visualise the final look right there on set. It meant we could adjust framing and movement instantly, saving time and avoiding costly reshoots.”
Jamie is preparing for the feature film Nightmares, with production planned in Los Angeles and London next year. The scale of the project will demand reliability across multiple units, and Jamie is already planning how Atomos gear will support him. “As a camera and drone operator, I need monitors that provide clarity and functionality. Atomos offers both, which make it easier to capture every frame exactly the way I want. I’m excited to see how their latest products will take my workflow even further on set.”
