Keeping it real

With the Shinobi GO in his kit, DoP Leandro de Carvalho transforms scenes shot in unpredictable lighting into perfectly exposed real-life stories.

By Atomos

Leandro de Carvalho is a Director of Photography based in São Paulo, Brazil. Known for his authentic and natural style, he specializes in documentaries and real-life stories. His passion for storytelling began at an early age, inspired by his father – a lifelong photographer. “My biggest inspiration was my father,” Leandro says. “Even though he’s retired now, I learned most of what I know by working alongside him.”

Leandro first picked up a camera at 14 and hasn’t looked back since. Now 36, he still applies the same principles to every project. “My style is realistic. I always aim to capture images that feel genuine,” he explains. He often improvises on set, using natural and ambient light to shape each scene.

During pre-production, Leandro scouts each location and assesses the lighting to maintain visual consistency. His go-to gear includes Sony FX30 and FX3 cameras, prime lenses, LED lighting, and the Atomos Shinobi GO monitor. “An Atomos monitor is essential for exposure control,” he says. “It’s a key part of my setup, regardless of the production size.”

“The Shinobi GO helps tremendously, especially with its false color feature, which allows me to dial in perfect exposure.”

Managing sunlight is one of Leandro’s biggest challenges. “Whether it’s coming through a window or directly hitting the subject, it can be unpredictable,” he explains. “The Shinobi GO helps tremendously in these situations, especially with its false color feature, which allows me to dial in perfect exposure. It helps me determine whether I’ll need lens filters or if I should compensate using LED lights to achieve the ideal balance.”

Leandro also relies on LUT preview, aspect ratio guides, and focus assist tools to keep his shots sharp and consistent. “These features make the entire process more accurate and efficient,” he says. “They help me stay agile and allow me to make quick decisions on set.”

For Leandro, choosing the right monitor is just as crucial as selecting the camera itself. “My advice is to really study the project you’re working on and understand what gear it demands for the best results,” he says. “With today’s smaller cameras and screens, a good external monitor – like those from Atomos, with high brightness and tools for framing and exposure – is an essential tool, right alongside your camera and lenses.”
